Today is Thomas Starr King’s 200th birthday!
On Sunday, December 1, 2024, members of the Starr King and First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco communities joined together for a special lecture from the Rev. Dr. John Buehrens titled, “Thomas Starr King at 200: What Most Don’t Know About Him.” People often remember Starr King for his role in “keeping California in the Union.” Yet his impact was far more than political: it was religious, cultural, educational, environmental, and philanthropic.
Rev. John Buehrens, in addition to serving as the 6th President of the UUA (1993-2001), has served the Starr King School for the Ministry as a trustee, faculty member, and friend. He retired in 2017 as Sr. Minister of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco. This event was the first of several SKSM and UUSF co-sponsored events aimed at celebrating Starr King’s 200th birthday by raising at least $200,000 for the school named for him.
In honor of today being his birthday, we are thrilled to share the recording and slide deck from this kickoff event!
