On Tuesday, November 12, 2019, Starr King School for the Ministry held its first Dr. Ibrahim Farajaje Annual Event at First Unitarian Church of Oakland. This event has been in our hearts and minds for some time – we have been searching for a way to honor the life and work of Ibrahim Baba, his legacy, and his fierce commitment to multi-religiosity and counter oppressive education.
For our inaugural year of this special event, we welcomed Dr. amina wadud as our honored speaker. Dr. wadud, also known as “The Lady Imam,” is a world-renowned Islamic feminist scholar and research scholar at Starr King School for the Ministry. She discussed how Ibrahim Baba and Starr King have impacted her life and work and what it means to be a female religious leader in Islam.
This man carried with him continuously and shared abundantly the deepest, most compassionately loving heart.”
We also heard from Rev. Rosemary Bray McNatt (President), Dr. Gabriella Lettini (Dean of Faculty & Chief Academic Officer), and Dr. Som Pourfarzaneh (Assistant Professor of Islamic and Digital Media Studies).
A special thank you to Dr. amina wadud for sharing her story and wisdom with us and helping us to honor our beloved Baba. Thank you to those who donated as well. Together you gave a total of $3,300 in honor of Dr. Ibrahim Farajaje.
Details for next year’s event are yet to be determined but you can join our mailing list at the box at the bottom of this page or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram to be kept in the loop!
