This synchronous online course (open to all interested students) introduces Ecowomanism, the third wave of womanism, where the study of theology, spirituality, and ethics centers African, African American, and Indigenous women’s contributions to the environment justice movement. Ecowomanism explores the emerging themes and issues in environmental justice, focusing on those intersecting with race, sexuality, gender, ethnicity, class, culture, religious expression, Mother Earth, and non-human species. We will engage the theoretical groundwork and common vocabulary for students interested in eco-theology, eco-spirituality, and eco-religiosity in Earth-based, World, and Abrahamic religious and spiritual traditions. The course examines the interdependence and interconnectedness relationship between Mother Earth, humans, and non-human species.
Evaluation is based on Populi’s participation, class discussion leadership, exploration paper, and final project and presentation.
This course is open to all degree programs at the Starr King School for the Ministry and has an inter-religious orientation. It will be taught from a womanist pedagogy perspective.
