What is an Endowment?

What is an Endowment and Why is it Important to Starr King?

Endowments are vital to the future of Starr King School for the Ministry as they provide permanent, self-sustaining sources of funding, which create stability, flexibility, and opportunity for generations to come.

When you make the decision to establish an endowed fund, your gift is invested to provide spendable income for the specific purpose you have designated (usually a scholarship). The original principal (or gift) is never spent, and any investment return over allowed spending and fees is reserved in the fund to keep it healthy and growing.

An endowment creates a strong financial foundation for the school, making Starr King less dependent on tuition and enabling us to keep tuition as low as possible. These enduring funds allow Starr King to maintain our distinctive educational approach which is rooted in the Unitarian Universalist values of countering oppressions, cultivating multi-religious life and learning, and creating just and sustainable communities.

What Can My Endowment Support?

The area your endowment supports is entirely up to you, as long as the purpose of the fund is in alignment with the mission and values of Starr King. You may designate your gift for many areas of Starr King for the purpose of supporting students with scholarships, fostering progressive theological scholarship, advancing faculty, or providing unrestricted dollars that remain flexible as priorities and needs change over time.

What Does it Cost to Create a Named Endowed Scholarship?

You can start your endowed scholarship through the Starr King School for the Ministry with a gift of $25,000 or more. Endowments can be funded with a one-time gift of cash or securities, or they can be paid over a maximum of five years. Endowments may also be initiated through a legacy gift.

Endowed gifts made through Starr King School for the Ministry offer alumni and friends the opportunity to have their names, the names of loved ones, or of those they wish to honor or memorialize linked to the school to serve as a permanent tribute to the endowment’s namesake.
