Starr King first year students - Orientation Fall 2010

An Invitation to Starr King's Opening Academic Convocation
 Dear Friend of Starr King,
"Ours is no caravan of despair!" the Starr
King entering class sang this week as they crossed the
threshold of the School. Our faculty,
staff, and returning students welcomed them with joy. Our new students are a powerful sign of
hope. So much news this summer has been
deeply troubling - the Ground Zero Mosque controversy has unleashed a
frightening groundswell of Islamaphobia; ecological and economic devastation
continues in the Gulf; and blatant racism is putting immigrants at risk in
Arizona. But here at Starr King a different spirit is rising. Our students are preparing themselves for
ministry and religious leadership that will counter-oppressions, cultivate
multi-religious understanding, and create just and sustainable
communities. These Unitarian
Universalist commitments permeate our educational work and are inspiring a new
generation of leaders.

You are warmly invited to join us for our Opening Academic
Convocation this coming Tuesday, September 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the Ecumenical
Center of Berkeley (2401 Le Conte Ave., 94709 --the church right next door to Starr King School.)
I will be preaching on "Connecting Beauty and Justice", the topic I
addressed this summer at the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly in
Minneapolis. Our faculty will process in
their academic regalia and we will bless the beginning of this new academic
year with music and prayers.
Come celebrate with us!
Or, if you can't be present in person, send us a word of your well
wishes. We need one another in these difficult days, and we need to surround
our emerging leaders will blessing and support.
